ESG Research Brief: Enterprise SSD Usage is Not a Flash in the Pan
6/30/2009
Despite the fact that flash-based solid-state drives (SSDs) offer performance levels more than 30 times greater than traditional hard disk drives (HDDs)—as well as providing other benefits such as higher availability and reduced power and cooling requirements—the cost of flash-enabled storage systems remains a significant roadblock to widespread adoption. In the enterprise market, early adopters have largely been organizations with ample storage budgets, as well as those whose current performance needs justify the significant price delta between SSD and HDD technology. However, the prevailing perception is that there is a fit for flash-based SSDs in an overall tiered storage strategy and that usage will become more ubiquitous as prices decline.
ESG Research Brief: Is Data Destruction a Compelling Use Case for Self-Encrypting Drives?
6/18/2009
To protect sensitive data, many storage vendors now offer encryption capabilities with their enterprise-class systems. In spite of increasing privacy legislation and an avalanche of publicly-disclosed data breaches, most large organizations believe their enterprise storage systems are relatively well-protected and thus continue to forego encryption. Some storage vendors are now proposing self-encrypting drives for another use case: data destruction. By deleting encryption keys, these vendors believe they can help enterprises automate data destruction processes. In theory, this is true—but ESG research demonstrates that, though key deletion for data destruction may have some niche market appeal, it is not a “killer app” for storage encryption across the broad enterprise market.

ESG Center Stage: NetApp, Dan Warmenhoven

In 2009, NetApp was ranked in the #1 spot on Fortune Magazine’s list of the Best Companies to Work For – and the company is obviously now one of the main players in a continuing battle with EMC over the acquisition of Data Domain.

In April 2009, Steve Duplessie, Founder of ESG and Senior Analyst, interviewed the CEO of NetApp, Dan Warmenhoven. In the 2 part ESG Center Stage video interview, Steve asks Dan about the elements that make NetApp one of the most admired and successful companies.

In Part 1, Dan talks about NetApp’s value systems and the importance of a sustainable culture. (8:39)

In Part 2, Dan talks about NetApp and the changing economics of the industry, measuring success and growth opportunities. (8:50)
